Compost by Culterra (60dm).

Culterra Compost 60dm³ is a bagged organic soil conditioner made from decomposed plant material. It is sold weed-free and free of harmful soil pathogens, and it adds beneficial microbes plus macro- and micro-nutrients to garden soil. One 60 dm³ bag covers about 5 m² at 1 cm thick. Use it to loosen clay, help sandy soil hold water, and prepare planting holes and vegetable beds. Mix about 1 part compost to 1 part existing soil when planting shrubs, trees and many indigenous plants. It is a soil improver, not a complete fertiliser and not a substitute for Culterra Lawn Dressing on established lawns.

Work it into the top 10–20 cm of soil, or use a thinner layer as a mulch around established plants (keep it off stems and trunks). Water after application. Fully matured compost should not burn plants when used as directed.

Best time to use it in South Africa:

You can apply compost whenever you are preparing soil, but these windows work best:

  • Summer-rainfall inland gardens (Gauteng, Highveld, Free State): late winter to spring (August–October) before the growing season, and again in autumn (March–April) when beds are refreshed.
  • Winter-rainfall Western Cape: autumn (March–May) so winter rain can wash nutrients in, or early spring (August–September) before summer planting.
  • Year-round: when planting trees, shrubs, roses, vegetables or new flower beds; after harvesting a veg patch; when renovating tired soil.

Avoid spreading a thick dry layer in extreme midsummer heat without watering it in.

What to use Culterra Compost 60dm on:

  • Vegetable and herb beds (dig in generously before sowing or transplanting)
  • Flower borders and new garden beds
  • Trees, shrubs and roses (mix into the planting hole and backfill)
  • Indigenous plantings (typically 1:1 with garden soil)
  • Containers and raised beds as part of a soil mix (not as a stand-alone potting soil)
  • Top-dressing established beds as a thin organic mulch

Do not use it as a fine lawn dressing; Culterra makes a separate lawn dressing for that job. Acid-loving plants (azalea, camellia, gardenia, many fynbos) are better with Culterra Acid Compost.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much area does one Culterra Compost 60dm bag cover?
About 5 m² when spread 1 cm thick. For planting beds you will usually mix it deeper into the soil, so coverage depends on how thickly you incorporate it.
  2. When is the best time to apply Culterra Compost in South Africa?
Spring and autumn are ideal: August–October inland before summer growth, and March–May in the Western Cape before winter rain. Use it any time you prepare a new planting hole or vegetable bed.
  3. Can I put Culterra Compost on my lawn?
It is a garden compost for beds and planting holes. For lawns, a screened lawn dressing is the usual product. A very thin layer can be worked into bare patches, but do not smother existing grass.
  4. What plants is Culterra Compost 60dm used for?
Vegetables, herbs, flowers, roses, trees, shrubs and many indigenous plants. Mix 1:1 with garden soil in planting holes. Use Acid Compost instead for azaleas, camellias and similar acid lovers.
  5. Is Culterra Compost weed-free and safe for new plants?
It is described as made from organic materials and free from weeds and harmful soil pathogens. Mature compost can be mixed into soil at planting without burning roots when used as directed.
