Kikuyu Grass Lawn Seeds by Kirchhoffs | 200g Pelleted Seed

Kirchhoffs Kikuyu is a vigorous creeping lawn grass for full-sun South African gardens. The seed is pelleted, so it is easier to sow evenly and better protected from insects and disease. Expect germination in 7–14 days in warm soil, then a spreading lawn that fills in over about 8–10 weeks.

The grass has a medium to coarse texture and a strong runner habit. That makes it a workhorse lawn for kids, dogs and everyday traffic, not a fine ornamental putting surface. Sow at 10g per m². One 200g pack covers about 20m² as a new lawn, or a larger area if you are only patching.

What you can use it for:

  • New kikuyu lawns in full sun
  • Repairing bare patches in an existing kikuyu lawn
  • High-traffic home gardens, play areas and dog runs
  • Filling gaps after levelling or after winter wear
  • Sunny banks and open beds where a tough summer lawn is wanted

Kikuyu needs sun. It is a poor choice for deep shade under trees. It grows hard in heat, then slows or browns in frost. That is normal dormancy, not plant death, in Highveld winters.

Best time to sow in South Africa:

Pack guide: spring to autumn, in the sun.

Best window: spring, September to November, once soil has warmed and frost risk has dropped. Seedlings then have a long summer to knit before winter.

Also possible: early summer if you can water daily until established, and early autumn while soil is still warm.

Avoid: mid-winter in frost areas, and very late autumn on the Highveld (seedlings need weeks before the first hard frost). In the winter-rainfall Cape, sow after the cold snap or in early autumn with reliable moisture. In summer-rainfall regions, sow ahead of or with reliable rain, and keep the seedbed wet until it germinates.

Keep the surface moist, not flooded. Do not let the top crust dry out during the first two weeks.

How to sow:

  1. Clear weeds, level the soil and rake a fine seedbed.
  2. Mix the pelleted seed with a little dry sand if you want even spread.
  3. Sow at 10g per m². Rake in lightly or press seed into the surface. Do not bury it deep.
  4. Water gently every day until germination (7–14 days).
  5. First light mow once the grass is well anchored and about 5–7cm tall.
  6. Feed with a lawn fertiliser after the lawn has established, not on bare seed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much lawn does a 200g pack of Kirchhoffs Kikuyu seed cover?
Sown at 10g per m², 200g covers about 20m² as a new lawn. Use a lighter rate only for overseeding thin patches.
  2. How long does Kikuyu seed take to germinate?
Usually 7–14 days in warm, moist soil. Full cover typically takes 8–10 weeks if you water consistently and control weeds.
  3. When is the best time to plant Kikuyu lawn seed in South Africa?
Spring to autumn, with the most reliable results from September to November. Sow only when soil is warm. Do not sow just before frost on the Highveld.
  4. Is Kirchhoffs Kikuyu seed pelleted?
Yes. The coating makes sowing easier and helps protect the seed from insects and disease.
  5. Can I grow Kikuyu in shade?
No. It needs full sun. In shade it thins out. Choose a shade-tolerant grass such as LM Berea or buffalo for those beds.
