Ludwig’s Rose Spider Mite 50ml by Kirchhoffs.

A registered miticide for red spider mite eggs and juveniles on roses, tomatoes and other listed plants.

This 50ml suspension concentrate contains etoxazole 100 g/ℓ. It is made to control the egg and immature stages of red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) on roses, tomatoes, apples and pears, and European red mite (Panonychus ulmi) on apples and pears. It also has registered use against certain mites in citrus and bryobia mite. It does not kill adult spider mites. Apply at the first sign of mite activity and cover leaf undersides thoroughly.

Reg. No. L6943 Act 36/1947.

What spider mites are:

Spider mites are tiny plant-feeding arachnids (related to spiders, not insects). The common garden pest in South Africa is the two-spotted / red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). Adults are usually less than 1 mm long and may look green, yellow, orange or reddish, often with two darker spots.

They live and breed mainly on the underside of leaves, especially in hot, dry, dusty conditions and on water-stressed plants (roses in pots are a frequent target). They pierce leaf cells and suck out contents. Damage starts as fine stippling, then leaves turn dull, yellow or bronze. In a heavy attack you may see fine webbing on leaves, stems and blooms, and lower leaves can drop.

Because this product targets eggs and juveniles only, early spraying matters. Adults already on the plant are not controlled by etoxazole, so timing and full coverage are part of how the product is meant to work. Beneficial mite predators are generally not harmed by this chemistry when used as directed.

Key points:

  • Controls eggs and juveniles of red spider mite and listed mite species
  • Does not control adult mites
  • Use on roses, ornamentals, apples, pears and tomatoes (follow the label for all crops)
  • Target-specific; described as low impact on many beneficial predators
  • Non-phytotoxic to listed host plants when used as directed
  • Edible crops: harvest interval 36 hours after the last application
  • Shake well; pre-mix, keep agitated, use the spray mix the same day

Always read the full label. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Do not eat, drink or smoke while mixing. Avoid spray drift into water, grazing or untreated plants. Rinse empty containers as required by law and do not reuse them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are spider mites?
Spider mites are minute arachnids that feed on plant sap, usually from the underside of leaves. Red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is the common pest on roses and many garden plants in hot, dry weather. Signs include speckled or bronze leaves, fine webbing and leaf drop.
  2. Does Ludwig’s Rose Spider Mite kill adult spider mites?
No. The active ingredient, etoxazole 100 g/ℓ, controls eggs and juvenile mites only. Apply at the first sign of mite movement and spray all leaf surfaces, especially undersides. Adults already present are not the target of this product.
  3. What plants can I use it on?
The product is registered for red spider mite on roses, tomatoes, apples and pears, and for European red mite on apples and pears, with additional listed mite uses including citrus. Use only on crops and ornamentals named on the label.
  4. How soon can I harvest vegetables after spraying?
The stated harvest interval for edible crops is 36 hours after the last application. Always follow the current product label.
  5. Will it harm bees, ladybirds or predatory mites?
It is described as target-specific and generally low in impact on natural mite predators when used as directed. It is not a broad-spectrum insecticide. Still follow label precautions, avoid drift, and do not spray flowering plants if the label advises against it.
