Bean Seeds - Climbing White Emergo by Kirchhoffs.

Kirchhoffs Bean Climbing White Emergo Seeds are a high-yielding climbing (runner) bean sold as a good replacement for the old favourite Witsa. Vines produce delicate white flowers and long, smooth green pods about 15–20 cm long. Pick young for crisp, rich flavour; leave some pods to mature if you want large white dry beans. Needs full sun and a strong trellis, teepee or fence - plants can climb 2–3 m. Sow before the soil gets too hot. Direct-sow 2–3 cm deep after frost, when soil is warm (about 20–25 °C). Germination is usually 7–14 days; first pods in about 70–80 days. Space about 45 cm between plants with 100 cm between rows, or sow a few seeds per planting station around each pole.

Keep roots evenly moist once flowers appear, pick every few days so plants keep cropping, and pinch tips when vines reach the top of the support. The variety is known to cope with less-than-ideal weather better than many runners. Do not sow into cold, wet soil — seed rots easily.

Best time to plant in South Africa:

  • Highveld / frost areas: after last frost, roughly September–December (sometimes from late August if soil is warm).
  • Middleveld: August–December.
  • Frost-free Lowveld and coast: a longer window; still avoid the coldest weeks and the most extreme midsummer heat for germination.
  • General rule: spring and summer, while nights stay mild and soil is warm. Kirchhoffs notes beans should be sown before the soil becomes too warm.

Succession sow every 3–4 weeks for a longer harvest. Provide the climbing frame at sowing time.

What these seeds can be used for:

  • Fresh green climbing beans for the kitchen
  • Freezing young pods
  • Mature white dry beans / soup beans
  • Vertical veg gardens, fences and teepees
  • High yield in a small footprint

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When should I plant Kirchhoffs White Emergo climbing beans in South Africa?
After frost, in spring and early summer when the soil is warm — typically September to December on the Highveld. Sow before the soil becomes very hot.
  2. How long until White Emergo beans are ready to pick?
Germination is usually 7–14 days. First tender pods are typically ready 70–80 days after sowing if you pick them young.
  3. Do White Emergo beans need a trellis?
Yes. They are climbing runner beans and can reach 2–3 m. Put poles, netting or a teepee in place at sowing.
  4. How deep and how far apart do I sow the seed?
Sow 2–3 cm deep. Allow about 45 cm between plants and about 100 cm between rows, or plant a small cluster around each support.
  5. Can I eat the dried beans as well as the green pods?
Yes. Harvest young green pods for cooking, or leave pods to ripen for large white dry beans used like cannellini in soups and stews.
