Sunflower Dwarf Sunspot Seeds by Kirchoffs.

Kirchhoffs Sunflower Dwarf Sunspot Seeds are easy-to-grow annual seeds for a compact classic yellow sunflower. Plants stay dwarf (about 60 cm / 2 ft) but still produce large, seed-filled golden heads that look cheerful in beds, borders and pots. They are ideal for full-sun South African gardens, children’s planting projects, cut flowers and bird feeding once the heads mature. Botanical name: Helianthus annuus ‘Sunspot’. Common names: sunflower / sonneblom.

Sow directly where they will flower. Sunflowers dislike root disturbance. Use well-drained soil, full sun (6–8+ hours) and keep seedbeds moist until germination, usually 7–14 days in warm soil. Space plants about 30–45 cm apart so the large heads have room. Water at the base once established; they are fairly drought-tolerant but flower better with steady moisture. Harvest flowers for the vase when petals open, or leave heads on the plant for birds and seed saving.

Best time to plant in South Africa:

Kirchhoffs lists this variety for spring / summer sowing. Wait until soil has warmed and frost risk has passed.

  • Most inland and Highveld gardens (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein): August–November, with September–October a reliable window.
  • Warmer coastal and subtropical areas (Durban and similar): from July–October is often possible.
  • Western Cape / Cape Town: late spring into early summer after the last cold snap; mid-spring through December works in many seasons.

Successive sowings every 2–3 weeks extend the bloom period. Do not sow into cold, wet soil. Commercial field sunflowers are often planted November–January; home-garden dwarf types can go in earlier once nights are mild and soil is warm.

What these seeds can be used for:

  • Compact sunny borders and front-of-bed colour
  • Containers, patios and small gardens
  • Cut-flower arrangements (sturdy short stems)
  • Kids’ gardens and school projects
  • Wildlife and bird food once seed heads ripen
  • Companion colour in vegetable beds (they stay short enough not to shade everything)

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When should I plant Kirchhoffs Dwarf Sunspot sunflower seeds in South Africa?
Sow in spring and summer after frost, when the soil is warm. September to November suits most regions. Warmer coastal gardens can start earlier; Highveld gardens should wait until nights are mild.
  2. How tall does Sunflower Dwarf Sunspot grow?
It is a dwarf variety, typically about 60 cm (around 2 feet) tall, with unusually large yellow flower heads for such a short plant. That makes it suitable for pots and small gardens.
  3. Can I grow Dwarf Sunspot sunflowers in containers?
Yes. Use a sturdy pot with drainage, full sun and well-drained potting mix. Keep evenly moist while seedlings establish. The compact habit is one of the main reasons this variety is sold for patios and small spaces.
  4. How long do Dwarf Sunspot sunflowers take to flower?
Expect germination in about 7–14 days in warm soil and first blooms roughly 8–12 weeks after sowing, depending on weather and sowing date.
  5. Do I sow sunflower seeds indoors or directly in the garden?
Direct sowing outdoors is best. Sunflowers form a taproot and often sulk if transplanted. Sow 1–2 cm deep in full sun after the soil has warmed.
