Best time to grow / start in South Africa:

Sow in spring to early summer (September to December), ideally September–November.

Soak seeds in hot water and leave overnight so the hard coat softens and the seeds swell. Sow in a well-drained mix, keep moist until germination, then water more sparingly. Germination often takes about 1–4 weeks. Give full sun. Protect young plants from frost. Once established it is fairly drought-tolerant.

More about the Paperbark Thorn bonsai:

The Paperbark Thorn is one of Southern Africa’s classic woodland trees, named for the light, corky bark that flakes in papery sheets. In the wild it often forms a wide, flat-topped crown — the silhouette many people associate with the African bush. Creamy, scented flower balls appear in the warmer months and attract bees and other insects. That bark, form and wildlife value make it a rewarding indigenous bonsai.

In a pot it wants full sun and sharp drainage. Treat the hard seeds with a hot-water soak before sowing, then keep young plants protected from frost. Once established it is tough and fairly drought-tolerant. Regular pruning helps create a compact tree with the bark character and spreading crown that make Paperbark Thorn bonsai so distinctive.
